McEwan Law is a law firm based out of the Kootenay Boundary region. Since our establishment in 1979, we have undergone significant growth and change.

Peter Somerville, Counsel

Born in Trail and called to the British Columbia Bar in 1977, Peter Somerville obtained an LLB in 1976 and a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1975 from UBC. Peter has practiced in Vancouver, Cranbrook, Victoria, Grand Forks, and Trail, B.C.

Peter’s practice is restricted primarily to Family Mediation and Residential and Commercial Real Estate Matters. Peter works in all three of our offices, and can be reached by e-mail at ps@mcewanlawco.com.

Ken Wyllie, Counsel

Ken Wyllie, born in Nelson and raised in Robson, received his degrees in Law and Commerce from the Universtiy of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand, in 1975. He returned to the West Kootenay in 1979, practising as Wyllie & Okros until David Okros retired in 2001. Since that time, he has practised exclusively as a criminal defence barrister as Wyllie & Co., merging with McEwan Law in June, 2011.


Ken is a past president of the Kootenay Bar Association, a former county representative for the Canadian Bar Association (B.C. Branch), and is a member of the Trial Lawyers Association of B.C. He has served as a director of the RDCK for 6 years and is a past member of the Economic Advisory Committee to the Columbia Basin Trust. He continues to serve as a trustee on the local water improvement district and the Robson Memorial Church Society.

Chris McEwan, Partner

Chris McEwan was born and raised in Trail. He has an Honours degree in English and an LLB from UBC. He has practiced as a Solicitor in Trail since 1983.

Chris is active in the community and in the legal profession. He has served on many volunteer boards, and he has done volunteer work for the Law Society and the Canadian Bar Association (B.C. Branch) REAL Advisory Committee. Chris concentrates on corporate/commercial matters.

Jesse Gelber, Partner

Jesse Gelber was called to the B.C. bar in 2002 joined McEwan Law on January 1, 2007.  He practices primarily in the areas of civil litigation and family law.  By prior arrangement, Jesse will take appointments in our Trail, Grand Forks and Castlegar offices.

Mary Lawson, Partner

Mary Lawson was born and raised in Trail, B.C. She graduated from McGill University in 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts (International Development Studies), and received her Bachelor of Laws with Great Distinction from the University of Saskatchewan College of Law in 2009.

Mary joined McEwan Law as an Articled Student in 2009, and was called to the Bar in 2010. She practices corporate/commercial law, real estate and estate planning.

Chris Trudeau, Associate

Chris Trudeau was raised in Robson and Castlegar. He graduated from Simon Fraser University in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts degree (Political Science and Economics). He moved to England in 2009 where he obtained his Bachelor of Laws degree (Honours) at the University of Sussex.

Chris was a summer student at McEwan Law in 2011 and joined McEwan Law full time in 2012. Prior to joining McEwan Law, Chris worked extensively in the construction industry in Vancouver, Fort McMurray, and Edmonton.

Chris was called to the B.C. Bar on February 16, 2015. His practice is focused on corporate/commercial matters and wills and estates. Chris works out of our offices in Castlegar and Grand Forks and can be contacted by e-mail at ctrudeau@mcewanlawco.com.

Jessica Sperry, Associate

Jessica Sperry graduated from McMaster University in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science (Biology and Pharmacology). She moved to Australia in 2005 where she obtained a Juris Doctor (with Second Class Honours Division A) at Bond University in 2007.  Jessica practiced Immigration Law in Sydney for 5 years before returning to Canada in late 2014 to join McEwan Law.

Douglas Sperry, Associate

Doug was born and raised in Trail, B.C. and attended Rossland Secondary School before obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree from Simon Fraser University. In 2005, Doug moved to Australia where he attended Bond University Law School, graduating with a Juris Doctor degree (Honours). Additionally, Doug has a Masters of Law degree from the University of New South Wales. In Australia, as practicing lawyer, Doug was admitted to the Supreme Court of New South Wales and the High Court of Australia. His primary practice area was commercial litigation and he has experience in multinational and boutique litigation law firm environments.
